What does it mean to be a part of a giant network of 26 countries, 46 campuses and 15,000 students from Tokyo to Istanbul, Paris to Abu Dhabi, Kocaeli to Sao Paulo? What are the qualities that make 42 the next generation software school? What are the advantages provided to 42 students? Why is it necessary to know coding?
Müge Şahin Kocahan, manager of 42 Software Schools of Türkiye Open Source Platform, talked about 42 subjects as a guest at the TEDxYouth@LyceeNDS event titled “Beyond the Horizon” held in Istanbul Notre-Dame de Sion French High School.
Kocahan summarized the philosophy of 42, which is inspired by the novel “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” by world-famous science fiction writer Douglas Adams, as “Using free thought, free expression and talents to solve the problems of society”.
“We are working for diploma equivalence between Türkiye and France”
Stating that 42 students are part of a global network of 15 thousand students in 26 countries, Kocahan added that they are working on diploma equivalence between 42 students in Türkiye and Ecole 42, which is headquartered in France, and gave the following information:
“42 Software Schools in France offer diplomas in three basic areas. These areas are; IT Solutions Design and Development, IT Architectural Specialist, IT and Information Systems Specialization. You get a diploma in these fields, including citizens of the Republic of Türkiye, if you study in France at 42. We have started a study to get diploma equivalency in Türkiye as well”.
Pointing out that software and coding knowledge are more and more demanded in our age where technology is developing very rapidly, Kocahan stated that every student’s coding journey at 42 is a personal experience. 42 schools do not have concepts such as coding knowledge, diploma, tuition fee and trainer; He explained that instead of these, innovative education methods such as peer learning, cooperative problem solving, and free learning model are applied.
Why is it necessary to know coding?
Pointing out that coding knowledge is now one of the most important skills demanded all over the world, Kocahan said, “76% of companies around the world cannot find the talent to fill urgent positions. As automation processes progress rapidly, we see that robots will take more place in the labor market. This is one of the developments that make learning coding compulsory for everyone.”
From high school students to medical school students at 42 Istanbul and Kocaeli campuses; Kocahan stated that there are students from many different backgrounds, from self-employed who wants to learn coding to white-collar workers who want to improve themselves:
“At 42, we care about and support the versatile development of our students. Very different students from almost every province of Türkiye and from different educational backgrounds come to our campuses and explore the beyond of their potential.”
Müge Şahin Kocahan stated that the right to enter the main program can be gained after passing a four-week intensive piscine:
“This four-week training period is like a simulation of the main program. Students with sustainable motivation can move on at a very intense pace. At this point, the determination of individuals for learning is very important.
After about 15 months, 67 percent of our students find a job. In addition, students who want to work while their internships continue can maintain their education at the same time, while also sustaining their work.”
